Hi Everyone, I didn’t really get much of a chance to watch the whole game but I was curious enough to find out who the umpire crew was, so I googled it and even though I didn’t find the umpire Roster for this coming Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, I did find out that Tony Maners was on the crew. Who is Tony Maners you ask? Well this gentleman is truly a Pro. I feel bad for Tony because he’s gained so much weight (I know, I ain’t no skinny-minny myself but Life Time Fitness gym is working on that!), he looked a lot different as we all do (except Vic, Mr. Italian Stallion!) after we hit our late 30s, early 40s. Tony is 57 years old but one thing is for sure, if all the amateur umpires watched this game last night, that’s a good thing!! Mechanically (as always) very sound. Great timing, very consistent (which comes from good timing), head locked in strong and very vocal. What was it 12 innings!? He stayed strong throughout the game. Now, in the 10th inning or so I saw him leaning with the catcher with right handed batters but I don’t remember seeing that early on in the game, so I’m thinking, he had to be getting tired. But you know what, with his strong Pro foundation, lean or no lean, he was spot on with his zone. He was tight and solid with his up and down zone and his corner to corner zone was excellent in my opinion, calling off the black inside and out. In my opinion, you have to have that wide zone in Amateur ball because the pitching is up and down, even in the College World Series. So you might think, “Oh Bugsy is just complimenting Tony because he knows him!” Not true oh you umpires you! Tony instructed for me at my Florida camp in the 90s, yes. Tony and I worked together when I lived in Florida, yes. AND Tony taught me a thing or two, yes! But we haven’t been in touch since 1995 or so. We weren’t that close towards the end, so believe me this is a very objective point of view about Tony Maners, he’s top notch and all umpires should pay attention to when he works. The weight? Oh geez, what am I gonna say, I’m 30 pounds over weight, so until I lose those pounds, no comment on his weight but finally I see a good umpire in the College World Series, A GOOD example for timing, consistency and vocal command of the game. One more thing before I leave you. Did you see the tag play in the 9th inning? It was approximately at the 45 foot line and that’s a hairy spot for a tag play. The first base umpire did the right thing to try to get proper angle but the tag was in the back of the batter-runner and very possibly the first base umpire could not see the tag AND AS WE TEACH, Tony yelled (very loudly), “I got it, I got it!” and Tony took the call, which was exactly right the thing. Tony came up the line and saw it was a tag in the back of the batter-runner and he knew he had the best view. Great mechanic and great call. That’s how you stay out of huddles and asking your partner about calls. You hustle, get in position and take charge. Any comments or questions gang, let ‘em rip! ~Bugsy~ Tony’s Story
